CEBU, PHILIPPINES — Cultural performers from Lapu-Lapu City earned international applause after showcasing Filipino heritage at the Chingay Parade 2026, one of Asia’s largest and most vibrant Chinese New Year celebrations, held in Singapore.
Members of Lapu-Lapu Arnis de Abanico and the Lapu-Lapu City Performing Arts performed before an international audience as part of the Philippine delegation, drawing praise for their dynamic presentation of local culture and tradition on Friday, February 27.
The delegation was joined by the Lapu-Lapu City Tourism Office, led by Officer-in-Charge Tourism Officer Garry Lao.
Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong personally met the performers and expressed his appreciation for Lapu-Lapu City’s participation in the prestigious parade.
The group also met Medardo Macaraig, Philippine ambassador to Singapore, who attended the event to support the city’s contingent representing the Philippines.
Prior to their departure, a total of 44 delegates were formally sent off by Mayor Cindi King-Chan during a ceremony at the Mayor’s Office on February 25.
The performers brought elements of the Pasigarbo sa Lapu-Lapu Festival to the international stage, performing at the F1 Pit Building, one of the main venues of the Chingay Parade.
Mayor King-Chan thanked the Singapore government for inviting Lapu-Lapu City to represent the Philippines, describing the opportunity as a proud moment for both the city and the country.
“Dako kaayo kini nga dungog para sa atong syudad nga ang atong Garbo sa Lapu-Lapu Festival maoy mopresentar sa Pilipinas sa maong parada. Ipasigarbo nato sa kalibutan ang katahum sa atong kultura ug ang espiritu sa mga Oponganon,” the mayor said.
Tourism Officer Lao said the invitation reflects the growing international recognition of Lapu-Lapu City’s signature festival, which highlights the culture, creativity, and traditions of the city’s 30 barangays.
