Gwen De La Cruz at the Helm of Mercure Mactan Cebu’s Transformation

With over three decades of experience in Asia’s hospitality sector, Gwendolyn “Gwen” Lanceta De La Cruz is set to take charge of the newest addition of a global brand in Lapu-Lapu City, Mercure Mactan Cebu.

The hotel, which is under the Megaworld Hotels & Resorts property, opened in June 2023 and was formerly known as Belmont Mactan. In December 2025, it underwent a major transformation and was rebranded as Mercure Mactan Cebu.

According to De La Cruz, this is the first property of Megaworld to transition into an international brand venture. She added that the primary objective of the rebranding is to broaden the hotel’s reach, specifically targeting the international market while leveraging Mercure’s reputation for delivering authentic local experiences.

As De La Cruz leads the transition, her philosophy is rooted in creativity and accountability. She emphasizes a balanced approach that serves the company’s targets, enhances guest experiences, and supports the welfare of employees.

With her strategic foresight, she has navigated external challenges, such as the Middle East crisis affecting the industry, by strengthening local tourism and recovery efforts, ensuring that Mercure continues to thrive.

De La Cruz shared that her mission has evolved from a young professional’s pursuit of success to a seasoned leader’s desire to give back by mentoring the next generation of hospitality professionals.

“When I was young, I aimed for success. Go up the ladder. But once you reach a certain point, you ask yourself a question: how do I give back and how do I serve my purpose? So, my aim now is really giving back, teaching the young hoteliers how to survive in this industry,” she said.

While the Mercure brand offers global prestige, its identity is anchored in Cebuano culture through key local touchpoints. Upon entry, guests encounter a massive mosaic of Lapu-Lapu and design elements inspired by regional icons like guitars and waves. Guest rooms feature custom murals of local activities like scuba diving, while the signature restaurant, Pulo, serves authentic local cuisine.

Mercure is situated within the 30-hectare Mactan Newtown and is positioned right across the Mactan Expo, further contributing to the region’s growing hospitality sector.

“Being a hotelier is not only a career, but it is what you live every day. If you choose that career, you really have to be selfless, and at the same time, you should always have a purpose: Why am I here?”
