CEBU CITY, PHILIPPINES— At least four individuals were killed while one is in critical condition during a vehicular crash involving a motorcycle and wing van in Sitio Maaslom, Barangay Busay, Cebu City on Tuesday afternoon, March 10.
The fatalities were identified as the motorcycle driver Jose Gacayan Jr, 26, a resident of Barangay Malubog; and his two passengers identified as Felex Vasquez, 50, and Ereneya Lopez, 60, who are both from Barangay Babag 2 in Cebu City.
Also dead was the driver of the wingvan identified as 49-year-old Roger Suyman, a native Tandag City, Surigao Del Sur.
Meanwhile, the crew of the wingvan identified as Gener Aberto Bacnis, 53-years-old, from Barangay Tabacalera, Pateros town in the National Capital Region, is currently in critical condition.
Based on the initial investigation of the Cebu City Police Office – Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU), the incident occurred at around 3:06 p.m. when both vehicles were traveling in opposite directions—the motorcycle was travelling uphill while the wingvan was also traveling downhill.
However, the wingvan reportedly overshot to the lane traversed by the motorcycle, causing both vehicles to collide with each other.
Subsequently, the wingvan ran over the motorcycle driver and his two passengers resulting in their sudden death.
Meanwhile, the driver of the wingvan was rushed to Vicente Sotto Memorial Hospital but was later declared dead on arrival.
The wingvan’s crew, who sustained serious injuries, was also brought to a separate hospital in Cebu City Medical Center for immediate medical treatment.
According to Police Colonel Franco Rudolf Oriol, spokesperson and the Deputy City Director for Administration for CCPO, brake failure is believed to be the reason that caused the wing van to collide with the motorcycle.
“According sa pahenante nga naka-survive karon nga padulhog daw sila unya nawad-an daw sila og brake,” he said, citing the statements from the wing van crew who survived.
Meanwhile, Oriol said that the TEU is currently conducting an ongoing investigation into the said incident.
