Josef Victor Chiongbian, the General Manager of Savoy Hotel Mactan Newtown, will mark his fifth year with the property this December. In an interview with The Freeman, Chiongbian looks back on a journey filled with challenges and growth since he joined Savoy in the middle of the pandemic.
Chiongbian stepped into a role that demanded resilience and vision not just because of the pandemic but also due to the destructive impact left by Typhoon Odette. Under his leadership, the hotel weathered the storm. One of his most significant contributions has been maintaining the morale of his team. He proudly shares that as the hotel turns six this November, many members of the pre-opening team remain—showing the strong culture of family within the company.
He describes himself as a servant leader who lives by the mantra: “Work hard. Play hard. No drama.” He believes that problems should be handled professionally and calmly, without unnecessary workplace tension. This mindset has shaped a work environment that values steady progress.
Beyond his role at Savoy, Chiongbian is actively involved in community and service organizations. He is a Toastmaster, the Global Service Team Coordinator of Lions Club District 301-B2, a chartered member of the Legions of Lapu-Lapu Eagles Club, and a volunteer at the Ayala Mall chapel ministry.
He shared that Savoy Hotel Mactan Newtown is uniquely positioned as both an airport hotel and a beachside destination, nestled within Mactan Newtown—“a city within a city.” Looking ahead, the hotel is set to open the Mactan Expo Center in December 2025, a venue poised to cater MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) activities in the years to come. Guests can also enjoy a wide array of food and beverage offerings, both by the beach and within the hotel.
Under Chiongbian’s steady leadership, Savoy continues to thrive—one step at a time.
