Jose Miguel “Jmi” C. Gullas had the chance to build a global career, even working on projects linked to major events like the FIFA World Cup and the Olympics. But he chose to return to Cebu, where his family has built a long legacy in education and public service. For him, it is not about creating his own name, but about continuing a mission that has helped generations of Cebuanos gain access to quality education.
Now serving as Assistant Vice President for Finance and Administration and Marketing Director at the University of the Visayas (UV), he carries this responsibility with humility. He believes his role is to protect the school’s values while helping it grow. UV has long been known as the “University with a Heart,” where students are given equal opportunities regardless of their background. He is working to keep that spirit alive while leading the school into the future.
One of his key efforts is pushing for digital transformation. He wants students to be ready for a fast-changing world by improving their digital skills. At the same time, he makes sure that people remain the focus. For him, technology should support learning, not replace the human connection that defines the school.
He also hopes to grow Cebu through sports. Drawing from his experience abroad, he plans to open “The Courts of Cebu,” a space for pickleball and padel. He sees sports as a way to build discipline, confidence, and community among young people.
Although stepping into a leadership role in a long-established institution is challenging, He leads by listening and learning. For him, legacy is not about recognition, but about keeping institutions strong and meaningful—while helping future generations dream bigger.
