Women today have a stronger voice, greater freedom of choice, and increasing influence in leadership. No longer confined to traditional roles at home, they have proven their ability to lead alongside men—even in public office. A perfect example of this progress is Cindi King-Chan, the mayor of Lapu-Lapu City.
Before becoming mayor, she served as the city’s lone district representative from 2022 to 2025. During this time, she worked closely with her husband, then-mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan, as they led the city together with a shared vision.
In 2025, she stepped into the role of mayor, continuing her work and carrying forward their leadership. Her administration focused on improving services and making sure that programs reached the people.
In her first 100 days, her leadership showed clear action. In health, the city hired more doctors, expanded hospital services, and opened the Lapu-Lapu City Eye Center, helping thousands of patients. Free medical services, mental health programs, and partnerships with hospitals were also strengthened.
In education, the city supported students and teachers through school supplies, scholarships, and better learning facilities.
Tourism and business also grew, with international events like IRONMAN bringing opportunities and boosting the local economy.
Programs in housing, environment, and social services were also pushed forward. From housing projects to coastal cleanups and job fairs, the goal remained the same: to improve the lives of Oponganons.
Women Uplifting Women
As the country celebrates National Women’s Month, Mayor Chan highlighted the importance of unity and support among women.
She said, “When we choose to value, listen, and lift one another up, we create a community where every woman feels seen, respected, and given the chance to grow.”
Her message reflects what her leadership stands for. Women are not just part of the community. They are leaders, builders, and changemakers.
Through programs like skills training, medical missions, and community outreach, the city continues to create spaces where women are supported and empowered.
She also recognized women in different fields, from teachers and health workers to public servants and uniformed personnel, for their role in shaping society.
Stepping Forward with Confidence
Mayor Chan’s story shows how leadership has changed over time. Once limited by societal expectations, women today are stepping forward and leading with confidence.
In Lapu-Lapu City, her leadership is guided by a simple but clear principle: serve the people, create opportunities, and make sure no one is left behind.
And as more women rise to lead, her message remains strong. “Believe in your ability, step forward, and lead with purpose.”
