MANDAUE CITY, CEBU— At least 40 families who were temporarily housed at the old Cebu North Bus Terminal (CNBT) for over three years have been officially relocated to the housing community, Balay Paglaum.
Situated in Barangay Guizo, the community accommodates 31 families who were fire victims in 2022 from Sitio Paradise, Barangay Looc, as well as nine families affected by demolitions in Barangay Subangdaku the same year.
The initiative, led by the local government of Mandaue, aimed to provide beneficiaries who were previously displaced in makeshift settlements with stable and comfortable shelter.
Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo “Jonkie” Ouano made a personal visit to the site to inspect the facilities and supervise the residents’ transfer on February 25.
He noted that the relocation became necessary due to the challenging situation of the families at the old terminal, particularly because of the area’s proximity to hazardous wastes, which posed risks, especially for young children.
“During that time, sa north bus terminal, dili kaayo suitable for living ba. So kani karon, mas dignified, mas disente,” said Mayor Ouano.
He added that the relocation took some time as officials intended to ensure that the families’ move was smooth and well-organized.
“Gisiguro man gyud nato nga himutang sila ug hapsay ilang pagbalhin diri,” he said.
Residents expressed their gratitude for the relocation, saying they were happy to move into a proper place to live.
“Malipayon kaayo mi. Daghan kaayong salamat nga gihatagan nami ug luna diri nga makabalhin ug makapuyo nami diri sa Balay Paglaum,” said fire victim Leah Mae Gumayao.
The City Social Welfare Services Office also spearheaded the distribution of household welcome materials for the residents to support their transition into their new homes. These include kitchen sets, solar lamps, mats, and rice supplies.
The rehousing event was also attended by City Administrator Atty. Sally Malig-on Jr., Housing and Urban Development Office (HUDO) Head Karlo Cabahug, CSWSO Focal Person Glydiza Gochoco, Community Affairs and Development Division Executive Assistant Ramelito Inopiquez, and other personnel from CSWSO and HUDO.
