As a visionary leader, a champion of inclusive education, and a business tycoon reshaping industries with purpose, Atty. Augusto “Gus” W. Go continues to strive and stay devoted in every path he takes at the ripe old age of 90.
In a modest office inside the University of Cebu (UC) main campus, Go, a prominent figure in Cebu, speaks not only about profits but also about helping students achieve their dreams and building businesses with a heart to serve.
He is the founder and chairman of the AWG Group of Companies and the newly elected president of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) for 2025–2026.
In 1964, he took charge of the struggling Cebu College of Commerce and transformed it into the University of Cebu. Since then, the institution has expanded to five campuses across Cebu, offering a wide range of academic programs.
Beyond his contributions to education, Go also remains actively involved in several industries, including banking, real estate, healthcare, and insurance.
While he has a diverse business portfolio, his unwavering commitment lies in the field of education. He has helped thousands of UC students reach their goals through scholarship programs that provide access to learning for those in need.
His accomplishments as a businessman and philanthropist have earned him numerous awards and distinctions over the years.
Most recently, Go was recognized as the Most Distinguished Individual at the ProgreCEBU Awards 2025 on July 15, 2025, at a hotel in Cebu City.
The award, presented by The Freeman, in partnership with the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), is given to individuals who demonstrate exceptional entrepreneurial excellence and significantly contribute to Cebu’s progress.
During his acceptance speech, Go proudly shared the recent board topnotchers and passers from UC across various degree programs. He also expressed appreciation for his staff, especially the heads of various academic departments, who continue to improve the university’s standing and introduce new programs that align with the changing needs of the world.
“This is the work of my people, not me. I will claim a little credit because I’m the conductor,” said Go.
Go shows no signs of slowing down, proving that age is, indeed, just a number and will not stop him from reaching new milestones. He continues to champion access to education, empower communities through inclusive business ventures, and remain committed to creating opportunities for others.
While many executives chose to retire in comfort, Go chose to remain active. He continues to oversee his businesses, forge new partnerships, and attend various events. His continued presence is a testament to his passion and stands as an inspiration to the Cebu business community.
