Michael Sy: Carrying La Fortuna’s Legacy Forward

For more than seven decades, La Fortuna Bakery has been part of Cebuano life, known for its beloved hopia, ensaymada, and other baked favorites. Today, third-generation leader Michael Sy is helping ensure that this 72-year-old family business continues to grow while staying true to the traditions that made it a household name.

To Michael, La Fortuna is more than just a bakery—it is a legacy built by his grandparents through hard work, perseverance, and a passion for quality. His mission is to honor that foundation while adapting to the changing tastes and needs of modern customers.

“I envision our company to continue what our late grandparents started,” he says. “We have to evolve and adapt to the current taste of the market while preserving our La Fortuna classics.”

Under Michael’s leadership, La Fortuna has embraced technology to improve operations, better understand customer preferences, and strengthen its connection with consumers through digital platforms. Data analytics and modern tools help the company work more efficiently, but Michael believes innovation should never come at the expense of quality.

“We value tradition,” he explains. “Upholding the handcrafted hopia still surpasses mass production when it comes to texture.”

While introducing new systems and equipment, La Fortuna continues to rely on the craftsmanship and baking methods that have defined the brand for generations.

Michael also remains committed to supporting local communities by sourcing ingredients such as ube, peanuts, and mongo from local suppliers. Sustainability is another priority, with the company exploring environmentally friendly packaging and recycling initiatives.

After spending two decades in the United States, Michael returned to Cebu with a leadership style focused on teamwork, communication, and empowering employees.

For him, success is not only about growing the business but also about passing on the values of grit, hard work, and integrity. As La Fortuna moves into the future, Michael is determined to ensure that its legacy continues to rise for generations to come.
