Dr. Potenciano “Yong” S.D. Larrazabal III has spent his life balancing many roles—ophthalmologist, marathon runner, entrepreneur, and leader of one of Cebu’s largest healthcare groups. But beyond the titles, he is a man driven by purpose, service, and the desire to continue the legacy his family built through CebuDoc Group.
Growing up, Dr. Yong was immersed in hospital life. His father, one of CebuDoc’s founders, often brought the family to the hospital after school while he made his rounds. Those early experiences taught him discipline, sacrifice, and the importance of always improving patient care.
Although he once dreamed of becoming an architect, he eventually followed his father’s advice to study medicine. After training in the Philippines, the United States, and Germany, he returned to Cebu and founded Larrazabal Eye, a practice focused on raising the standard of eye care in the region. Starting out was not easy. “Expectations were high,” he admits. “I knew I had to prove myself.” Through hard work and patient-centered care, the clinic grew into one of the most respected eye centers in Cebu and later expanded to Manila.
His greatest challenge came after the passing of his father, when he suddenly had to lead CebuDoc Group and oversee thousands of employees. “All eyes were on me,” he recalls. Despite the pressure, he guided the institution through expansion, opening new hospitals and introducing more specialized healthcare services.
For Dr. Yong, leadership is rooted in integrity and compassion. He believes healthcare should always focus on service, not just profit. During the pandemic and Typhoon Odette, he continued seeing patients daily, leading by example while supporting his staff and community.
His advice to young entrepreneurs is simple yet powerful: “Do it afraid.” For him, success does not come from waiting to feel fully ready. It comes from taking the first step, staying committed to your purpose, and continuing forward despite fear.
