CEBU CITY, PHILIPPINES — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has warned that the heat index in Cebu may reach the “danger” level by the end of April and could persist through May.
Jhomer Eclarino, chief weather forecasting specialist at PAGASA-Visayas, said the current heat index in Cebu already falls under the “extreme caution” category.
Cebu has recorded elevated temperatures in recent days, with the heat index reaching 36°C on Tuesday, April 7.
“From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., the heat index was at 36°C, and by 1 p.m., it was 35°C,” Eclarino said.
He added that the heat index for April 7 and April 8 is expected to range between 36°C and 37°C, still within the extreme caution category.
The extreme caution category ranges from 33°C to 41°C, while the danger level spans 42°C to 51°C.
Eclarino said the recent spike in temperatures is due to the end of La Niña and the onset of the warm and dry season, which began on March 23.
“May marks the peak of the summer season,” he said.
The highest recorded heat index in Cebu this year so far is 37°C, logged on April 5 during Holy Week. Last year, PAGASA-Mactan recorded a high of 40°C in April, while Bohol reached 44°C.
Authorities are advising the public—especially traffic enforcers, delivery personnel, and individuals with health risks—to avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
“If you go outdoors during peak heat, it’s dangerous as the heat index rises. Drink water regularly, avoid prolonged outdoor activities, and stay in cool areas,” Eclarino said.
He also emphasized that even healthy individuals may experience heat stress or heat exhaustion, echoing warnings from the Department of Health.
