Pio Paulo Castillo: The heir with a heart

Pio Paulo Castillo may come from a well-known family business, but he believes leadership is more than simply inheriting a company. As Vice President for Sales of International Pharmaceuticals Inc. (IPI), one of the Philippines’ largest homegrown pharmaceutical and wellness companies, Paulo is working to continue his grandfather’s vision while bringing new ideas to the business.

IPI was founded by his grandfather, Pio Castillo Sr., who believed that every Filipino should have access to affordable health and wellness products, even in faraway provinces. This belief shaped the company’s mission and continues to guide Paulo today. For him, business should not only earn profit—it should also serve people and improve lives.

Growing up, Paulo saw how the company treated its employees like family. Many managers were close to the Castillo family, and employees often joined family gatherings and activities. These experiences helped shape his leadership style. He believes that when people feel valued and respected, they become more committed to their work.

Today, Paulo helps lead IPI’s sales operations while supporting the company’s move toward modernization. The company is adopting new systems and technologies to improve efficiency and better respond to customer needs. However, Paulo says technology should always support the company’s main goal—serving communities and making health products more accessible.

Challenges such as the pandemic and Typhoon Odette tested the company’s strength. These events taught Paulo the importance of teamwork, quick decision-making, and resilience during difficult times.

Beyond business growth, IPI continues to support free medical missions, community wellness programs, and environmental efforts like using solar power and reducing plastic use.

For Paulo, the future of IPI is about more than expansion. It is about continuing a legacy of care—helping people live healthier lives while proudly showing that Filipino companies can succeed both at home and on the global stage.
